Understanding the Self-Care Wheel

The Self-Care Wheel is a wellness assessment tool that helps you evaluate how well you are caring for yourself across multiple dimensions of life. Unlike the Wheel of Life (which measures satisfaction), the Self-Care Wheel focuses specifically on the activities and habits you engage in to maintain your wellbeing.

The 6 Dimensions of Self-Care

Based on the Self-Care Wheel methodology developed by Olga Phoenix, our assessment covers six essential areas of wellness:

  • Physical Self-Care: Sleep, exercise, nutrition, medical care, and body awareness
  • Emotional Self-Care: Processing feelings, stress management, setting boundaries, and emotional expression
  • Psychological Self-Care: Learning, creativity, mindfulness, therapy, and challenging negative thoughts
  • Spiritual Self-Care: Meaning, purpose, values alignment, gratitude, and connection to something greater
  • Personal Self-Care: Hobbies, rest, relationships, fun activities, and personal time
  • Professional Self-Care: Work-life balance, career boundaries, support systems, and professional development

Why Self-Care Assessment Matters

Regular self-care assessment helps prevent burnout before it happens. When multiple areas of self-care are neglected (scoring below 4), it can indicate burnout risk. By identifying these areas early, you can take proactive steps to restore balance and maintain your overall wellbeing.

How to Interpret Your Results

  1. Look at your lowest scores: These are your priority areas for improvement
  2. Check for burnout risk: If 3 or more areas score below 4, your self-care needs immediate attention
  3. Notice patterns: Are certain types of self-care consistently neglected?
  4. Start small: Pick one activity from your lowest-scoring area and commit to it daily
  5. Reassess monthly: Track your progress and celebrate improvements

Self-Care vs Life Satisfaction

The Self-Care Wheel is complementary to the Wheel of Life assessment. While the Wheel of Life measures how satisfied you are with different life areas, the Self-Care Wheel measures what you are actually doing to take care of yourself. You might be satisfied with your career (high Wheel of Life score) but neglecting your physical health (low Self-Care score).

Building a Sustainable Self-Care Routine

The key to effective self-care is consistency, not perfection. Start with small, manageable activities in your lowest-scoring areas. Even 5-10 minutes of intentional self-care daily can make a significant difference over time. Use this assessment monthly to track your progress and adjust your routine as needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Self-Care Wheel is a wellness assessment tool that evaluates your self-care practices across 6 key dimensions: Physical, Emotional, Psychological, Spiritual, Personal, and Professional. Unlike life satisfaction assessments, it focuses specifically on the activities and habits you engage in to care for yourself, helping identify neglected areas that may lead to burnout.

The 6 dimensions are: Physical (sleep, exercise, nutrition, health appointments), Emotional (feelings awareness, stress management, boundaries), Psychological (learning, creativity, mindfulness), Spiritual (meaning, purpose, values alignment, gratitude), Personal (hobbies, rest, relationships, joy), and Professional (work boundaries, support systems, career growth).

The Wheel of Life assesses your satisfaction with different life areas (career, relationships, finances). The Self-Care Assessment focuses specifically on what you DO for yourself - your wellness activities and habits. They are complementary tools: one measures life satisfaction, the other measures how well you are caring for yourself.

If multiple areas score below 4, you may be at risk of burnout from neglecting your self-care. This does not diagnose burnout, but signals that your self-care practices may need immediate attention. Consider focusing on your lowest-scoring areas and possibly speaking with a healthcare provider if you are experiencing symptoms.

We recommend monthly reassessments to track your self-care patterns over time. This helps you see progress, identify seasonal patterns, and catch declining areas before they lead to burnout. Our tool saves your history so you can compare assessments.
