How to Do a Life Audit

A life audit is a structured, honest inventory of your whole life, done in one sitting of about two hours. Instead of vague new-year resolutions, you walk through eight areas one by one: health, relationships, career, money, growth, environment, fun, and contribution. For each one you rate your satisfaction, check the facts, and make a decision. The output is not a mood board. It is a short list of verdicts and first moves you can act on next week.

Facts first, feelings second

Most self-assessments stop at "how do I feel about this area?" A real audit goes one step further and asks what the calendar and the bank statement say. How many hours actually went to your health last week? How much money quietly leaks into an area you rated a 3? Does the area fuel you or drain you? The gap between your rating and your actual investment is where the useful findings live. An area you claim matters but that gets two hours a week is not a priority, it is a wish.

Life audit vs the wheel of life

The classic Wheel of Life is a five-minute snapshot: rate eight areas, look at the shape, notice the dents. It is a great pulse check, and if that is what you need today, use it. A life audit is the deeper follow-up. It adds the fact-check layer (hours, money, energy) and, crucially, forces a verdict on every area: Keep what works and protect it, Change what matters but is broken, Stop what drains you and deserves to be dropped or delegated. Ratings describe your life; verdicts change it.

The verdict is the point

Keep, Change, Stop sounds blunt because it is meant to be. Every area of your life is currently getting some allocation of your time, money, and attention, whether you chose it deliberately or not. The audit makes that allocation visible and asks you to either endorse it or fix it. For every Change and Stop, write one first move: a step small enough to complete within a week. "Fix my sleep" is a resolution. "Set a 10:30pm phone alarm and charge it outside the bedroom" is a first move.

Run it quarterly

A life audit works best as a quarterly ritual, roughly every 90 days. That is long enough for your first moves to compound and short enough that drift gets caught early. This tool saves each completed audit with its date and shows the rating deltas against your previous one, so you can see whether the areas you marked Change actually moved. Everything is stored locally in your browser: no account, no server, no one reading your answers.

How to Use This Tool

  1. 1

Set aside about two hours: this works when it is honest, and honesty takes longer than a quick rating

  2. 2

Rate each of the eight areas from 1 to 10, then answer the fact-check questions about where your hours, money, and energy actually go

  3. 3

Name one thing working and one thing draining in every area, in plain language

  4. 4

Give each finding a verdict: keep it and protect it, change it, or stop it entirely

  5. 5

Write one first move for every change and stop item, small enough to do this week

  6. 6

Save the audit, then run it again next quarter and compare the deltas against your last one

Frequently Asked Questions

A life audit is an honest inventory of where your time, energy, money, and attention actually go, area by area, followed by decisions about what to keep, change, and stop. It is deliberately unglamorous: less about visualizing an ideal life and more about looking at the current one with the same rigor you would apply to a set of accounts.

The wheel of life is a fast satisfaction snapshot: rate each area, see the shape, spot the dips. A life audit goes a level deeper by adding facts and decisions: how many hours actually went into that area last week, what is genuinely working, what is draining, and what you will keep, change, or stop as a result. Use the wheel for a five-minute check-in and the audit when you are ready to act on it.

Quarterly suits most people. Annual is too infrequent to catch drift, and monthly turns into an admin ritual that stops generating insight. Every three months gives changes enough time to show results while still being often enough to correct course. Natural triggers also work well: a job change, a move, the end of a big project, or a birthday.

This tool uses eight: health, relationships, career, money, growth, environment, fun, and contribution. Together they cover the practical, the relational, and the meaningful, without splitting so finely that the exercise becomes tedious. The point is not the exact taxonomy but the coverage: an audit that only examines work and fitness will miss the areas quietly doing the most damage.

That is common and it does not mean everything is broken. Pick the two lowest-rated areas and act only on those, because attempting eight simultaneous life changes reliably produces zero. The keep list matters as much as the change list: naming what is genuinely working tells you what to protect while you fix the rest.

Yes. Your ratings, notes, verdicts, and audit history are stored only in your browser using localStorage. Nothing is uploaded, there is no account, and nobody else can read it. Export the text if you want a copy, and clearing browser data erases everything.
