Chronotypes Explained: Lion, Bear, Wolf, Dolphin

TL;DR. A chronotype is your inherited preference for when you sleep and when you think clearly. It is real, it is measured in research with instruments like the MEQ and the Munich chronotype questionnaire, and the lion, bear, wolf and dolphin animals are a popular repackaging of that same work rather than a separate science. Knowing your type will not change your job. What it changes is which hour you defend for hard thinking, when you train, and when you stop looking at screens. It also drifts with age, so a teenager who cannot get up at 7am is not sentenced to that forever.

It is 22:40 as I write this. My daughter went down two hours ago, the contract work is shut, and this is the slot I have. It is also close to the worst time of day for me to think hard about anything.

That gap between when I work and when I work well is the entire practical value of the chronotype idea. Not the animal names. The gap.

What a chronotype actually is

Your chronotype is where you sit on a spectrum of circadian timing: whether your internal clock runs early, late, or somewhere in between relative to the clock on the wall. The master clock sits in the suprachiasmatic nucleus, it is set mainly by light, and there is real genetic variation in how it runs. That is why "just go to bed earlier" is such useless advice for a late type. You are not arguing with a habit, you are arguing with a phase.

Two instruments do most of the work in the research literature, and neither mentions animals.

The Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire, published by Horne and Östberg in 1976, asks about preference. What time would you get up if the day were entirely yours? When do you feel at your best? How alert are you in the first half hour after waking?

The Munich Chronotype Questionnaire, developed by Till Roenneberg's group, asks what time you actually sleep on work days and on free days, and uses the midpoint of sleep on free days as your marker. It measures behaviour rather than opinion, which is why it also gives you a social jetlag number as a side effect.

Both describe the same underlying thing. Neither is a personality test.

Where the animals came from

The lion, bear, wolf and dolphin framing comes from Dr Michael Breus, a clinical psychologist and sleep specialist, in his 2016 book The Power of When. Lions wake early and peak in the morning. Bears track the sun and make up the largest group. Wolves come alive in the late afternoon and evening. Dolphins are light, restless sleepers whose energy is harder to predict.

Be straight about what this is: a repackaging of the morningness-eveningness lineage, plus an extra bucket for restless sleepers, given names that stick. It is not a rival theory and it replaced nothing. The percentage splits quoted alongside the animals, roughly half the population as bears and 10 to 20 percent for each of the others, are Breus's own estimates rather than an agreed epidemiological figure. Read them as a way of saying most people sit in the middle.

I use the animal framing anyway, for one unglamorous reason. Nobody remembers an MEQ score. Everybody remembers being told they are a wolf.

The four types, side by side

The peak focus column is also the slot for hard cognitive work. Two details the quiz adds inside those windows: for lions the sharpest creative block sits at the back of the morning, 10:00 to 12:00; for wolves the creative and deep work blocks are the same 17:00 to 21:00 stretch, which is exactly the part of the day most jobs have already spent.

Read the table as a shape rather than a prescription. If a school run decides your wake time, the movable columns are peak focus and wind down, and those two are enough.

Social jetlag is the cost of the mismatch

Roenneberg's term for it is the best one going: social jetlag. It is the difference between the middle of your sleep on free days and on work days. Wake at 6:30 with an alarm five days a week, drift to 9:30 on a Sunday, and you are changing time zone twice a week without leaving your bed.

The research literature associates larger social jetlag with worse sleep quality and poorer health and mood outcomes. I am not going to quote you a figure, because effect sizes vary a lot between studies and precision I cannot back up is worth nothing to you. The direction is consistent, and that is the part you can act on.

It falls hardest on late types for a structural reason: school and office hours were built for early ones. A lion with a 9am start has a small mismatch; a wolf has a chronic one.

The two levers that reduce it without changing jobs are keeping your wake time within about an hour on free days, and getting real daylight soon after waking. Both are unexciting, and both beat rearranging your calendar.

When your job and your body disagree

Most people cannot choose their hours, and most chronotype content quietly assumes otherwise. Four moves that do not require a new job:

Defend one hour. Not your whole peak window, one hour of it, for the task that most needs your judgement. Block it, and move it as close to your peak as the calendar allows.

Move meetings before you move yourself. A recurring 9am status call costs a wolf more than it costs anyone else in the room, and meetings are the most negotiable thing on most calendars. What meetings really cost makes the case in money if you need one for the conversation.

Spend the trough on purpose. Everyone has a slump. Feed it admin, email, expenses, the tidying work that survives a dull brain. This is the practical half of working with your ultradian cycles.

Fix the end of the day, not the start. Your wake time usually belongs to other people. Your wind down usually belongs to you, and it is the lever that changes how the next morning feels.

There is also a real tension with the most popular productivity advice there is. Eat the frog says do the hardest thing first. For a wolf, "first" should mean first of your good hours, not first of the calendar day. Doing hard cognitive work at 7:30am because a book said so is just doing it badly.

Your chronotype is not fixed for life

Chronotype drifts with age in a consistent pattern. Young children lean early. Timing pushes later through adolescence and reaches its latest point around the end of the teenage years, then reverses and moves gradually earlier through adulthood, with older adults tending earliest of all.

That matters for how you talk to a teenager who cannot get up. They are not lazy, they are at the late end of a curve that comes back. It also means the type you got at 19 is not the type you have at 40, so retaking a quiz every few years is not a pointless ritual.

What you cannot do is convert yourself on demand. Light, consistency and meal timing shift a phase at the edges. They do not turn a wolf into a lion, and any plan that assumes they will is a plan that fails in week three.

What the quiz on this site actually does

Twelve questions, about three minutes. It asks when you would wake with no alarm, when you feel mentally sharp, how you sleep, how mornings feel, when you want dinner, when you would rather have a difficult conversation, and a few more of the same kind.

What it is not: a self-report preference quiz built on the Breus framing is not the MEQ, not the Munich questionnaire, and not a screen for any sleep disorder. The dolphin description in particular reads a lot like insomnia, because that is roughly what the category was built from. If you routinely cannot sleep, that belongs with a doctor and not with a quiz on a habit tracker's website.

Three things to do with the result

  1. Move one task into your peak window this week. One. If nothing moves, the result was entertainment.
  2. Set a wind down alarm at the time your type suggests, and treat it as the end of input rather than the start of sleep.
  3. Check the prediction against yourself. Rate your energy a few times a day for two weeks with the energy level tracker. Two weeks of your own data beats any animal.

Where this leaves me

I am almost certainly a bear living a wolf's schedule, and no article fixes that. My 10:00 to 14:00 peak belongs to work that pays, and Loggd gets 21:00 to 23:30.

What did help was giving up on the idea that I could think well at 22:00. The evening slot now gets mechanical work: tests, CSS, wiring up screens I already designed on paper. Anything needing judgement waits for Saturday morning. Same hours, less damage.

That is what a chronotype is good for. Not optimisation. Just knowing which hours to stop expecting things from.

The more realistic goal is to reduce the mismatch: move the hardest task rather than the whole person, and protect the wind-down hour, which is usually the piece you actually control.

Does your chronotype change with age?

Yes, and this is one of the more reassuring findings in the field. Young children tend to be early types. Timing shifts later through adolescence, reaching its latest point around the end of the teenage years, then gradually moves earlier again through adulthood, with older adults tending earlier still. A sixteen year old who cannot function before 10am is not sentenced to that for life, which is worth saying to any teenager who has been told they are simply lazy.

Which chronotype is the most productive?

None of them. The productivity difference between types is mostly an artefact of the schedule the world runs on, which suits early types and penalises late ones. A wolf given a 5pm to 9pm deep work block is not less capable than a lion at 8am. The useful question is not which type is best but how far your working hours sit from your peak, and which single hour you can move to close the gap.
